One day I was walking by my woodpile and noticed this piece of spalted birch. I had just started to make bowls on the lathe and wanted to see what I could do with this chunk of wood. I am very pleased with the results and we use this bowl to store our keys by the back door. Because of the spalting, I did have some tear out which required quite a bit of sanding. I need to prefect my technique to deal with issues such as this. Some wood turners will “stabilize” the wood by impregnating resin into the rough turned bowl and you can also use CA glue to fill the voids. I will need to learn a bit more about those techniques.
